Thank you for your interest in ASQT! As this is the inaugural year of our tournament, you might find the following FAQs relevant.

What language are the tournaments held in?

Although Singapore has four official languages, all of our tournaments will be held in English, to allow more international schools to participate. We apologize if this is an inconvenience.

What are the divisions and which students may participate?

For the 2015-16 school year, we will be dividing into two divisions, junior varsity and varsity. All local or international school students will be able to participate in one of the two provided they are under 19 years of age. The Junior Varsity division is exclusively for students born on or after June 1, 1999. This division is meant to allow younger players a fairer competition. JV teams will play in a separate bracket for a separate title at our tournament. However, skilled younger players are welcome to play for their school in the Varsity division. JV players are required to bring identification the day of the tournament to verify their age.

This division is subject to change, depending on the number of teams that register.

What is the tournament's format?

The competition will be held over a single day. A specific schedule will be posted closer to the tournament date, as times will depend on the number of registered teams. We anticipate holding several round-robin games in order to come up with a proper bracket. These "placement" rounds will be followed by elimination rounds, with teams moving up and down the bracket based on their performance. The top teams will then play in the final games.

We will send more specific information to registered teams in the weeks before the competition.

What is the game format?

Please see the Rules document under the Resources tab - a summary here would be too long.

How can we sign up?

Registration will happen here. Please register as a team under your school's name, unless you are homeschooled. Should you want to add or remove members from your team after registering, please contact us at .

Note: schools sending more than one team should provide an additional letter or number to differentiate the teams; for instance, Singapore School A and Singapore School B.

Which types of schools may compete?

Any and all are welcome! Students from secondary/local schools, private schools, and all kinds of international schools are welcome to participate. If you are homeschooled, feel free to register anyway. We will attempt to add you to an all-star team, without affiliation to a particular school, and will contact you later on.

Are there special qualifications teams and players have to meet?

No, any school or student is free to register.

Can my school send more than one team?

Yes, the more the merrier.

How many students make up a team?

Teams are capped at four, and we recommend you send four players if possible. However, three and even two player teams have been very successful in the past, and may participate.

May I still participate even if I'm not really a science player?

You may, but keep in mind most of the questions are very science specific.

How many opportunities to compete will there be?

For the 2015-16 school year, we have scheduled one tournament on September 19, with a possible second tournament in the spring. In the following years, we hope to have qualifying rounds and then a championship, and hopefully expand to other Southeast Asian countries.

What types of science will be represented?

We hope to include a wide variety of scientific topics, but will focus mostly on biology, chemistry, physics, and math, both computational and theoretical. For more information on distribution, find the appropriate link under Resources

What's the difference between ASQT and other science competitions?

ASQT is the first competition of its kind, being the first science specific tournament that uses pyramidal style quizbowl. We come closest to competitions like the National Science Bowl, but have questions that focus on depth of knowledge rather than memorization of facts.

Can you provide us with some sample questions?

Our tossup questions are pyramidal, meaning they start hard and get easier as the question goes on. These questions are for you to buzz in on, like you see in quiz programs like Jeopardy, and will be followed by a single-part bonus for the team that answered correctly. Please see the sample packet under Resources to get an idea of what this looks like.

Is there any way to prepare?

While there's no guaranteed list of things that will appear in our tournament, the more you know the better off you'll be! Check under Resources for our frequency list, with 100 things that are most important to know, as well as links to various helpful preparation websites.

Please keep in mind Quizbowl is not like a school examination - the more you know about a particular topic, the quicker you'll be able to buzz in and win your team points. Depth of knowledge is important as well as breadth.

I am a teacher/student/parent, are there volunteer positions at the event?

Yes! We can use all the help we can get. Adults over the age of 18 or students with quizbowl experience may register to be moderators/readers or scorekeepers, and we will also need volunteers for computing scores and other logistical tasks throughout the day.

Who can be an advisor?

Any legal adult (age 18 and above) can be an advisor to a team. It is recommended that the advisor be a teacher or parent.
